Bayer CropScience named 2009 winner of NC Industrial Biotech Leadership Award

Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, July 2009.
The North Carolina Biotechnology Center has named Bayer CropScience (BCS) as the 2009 winner of the North Carolina Industrial Biotechnology Leadership Award. The award was given at a breakfast reception during the sixth annual World Congress on Industrial Biotechnology & Bioprocessing.

“We are proud to honor BCS for its strong support of university research and science education as well as its scientific and technical excellence,” said E. Norris Tolson, president and CEO of the Biotechnology Center. “BCS is an icon in the field of agricultural biotechnology and a preeminent member of our own North Carolina life-science community.”

A committee of representatives from the Biotechnology Center, the Biofuels Center of North Carolina, and state departments of agriculture and commerce selected BCS from a field of 16 nominees.

In addition to its support of academic research and online science-education materials, the company garnered acclaim for its enhancements of agricultural technology, strategic partnerships for the development of advanced seed technologies, and advances in pest- and disease-control chemicals.

This is the fourth year that the Biotechnology Center has given the leadership award at the annual World Congress meeting. Previous recipients included DuPont, Novozymes and Syngenta.

The Biotechnology Center is a private, non-profit corporation supported by the N.C. General Assembly. Its mission is to provide long-term economic and societal benefits to North Carolina by supporting biotechnology research, business, education and strategic policy statewide.
